What can I do to drink responsibly during the holidays?

If you plan on attending a holiday celebration in Michigan, chances are alcohol will be involved. Knowing who to drink responsibly is crucial in this case, both for yourself and other party-goers.  Drinking and driving can get you in trouble with the law and it can also lead to a devastating accident. In this case, the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility offers the following advice.

All drivers should be aware of the legal limit. If you’re stopped by law enforcement and undergo a breathalyzer test, a blood alcohol content greater than 0.08% is considered a crime. However, it can be difficult to tell how many drinks it takes to get to this level. In fact, there are many different factors that can contribute to a person’s inebriation.

Your gender plays a role, as does your age, height, and weight. In this case, counting the number of drinks you’ve had may not give you an accurate estimate. You can also look for things like slurred speech or impaired coordination. If these occur, you definitely should not get behind the wheel. The same can be said of others presenting the same physical characteristics.

So, what can you do if you’re too drunk to drive? Ride shares are ideal in this case, as they are easily accessible in most cities and conveniently take you home with little notice. You may also consider calling a cab or taking public transportation. If you know you’ll be drinking, try to find a designated driver. Lastly, if you think a loved one has had too much to drink, try to help them find another way home or offer a place to stay for the night.
