Drunk driving and Thanksgiving

As Michigan residents prepare for Thanksgiving, they may think about their holiday menu and guest list. One thing they may not consider is drunk driving. As the holiday season draws nearer, though, it is important for people to think about drunk driving.

Thanksgiving witnesses more impaired driving accidents than many people may realize. According to The Drive, over 800 people died during the holiday weekend after being in a collision with a drunk driver between 2012 and 2016. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Transportation has said that many people begin drinking the day before Thanksgiving. This means that people need to be careful whether they drive across town or across the state to visit family.

As people hit the road over Thanksgiving weekend, it is important for them to recognize the signs that another driver may be drunk. State Farm says that intoxicated drivers might stop suddenly or drift between lanes. They may also brake frequently without cause or drive without their headlights on. Additionally, a drunk driver might make wide turns or almost collide with other vehicles. If people think another driver is intoxicated, it is a good idea for them to pull over and call emergency services.

While people need to be wary of drunk drivers, it is also important for them to ensure they do not drive if they are intoxicated. When people enjoy their holiday meal, it is a good idea for them to drink nonalcoholic beverages and make sure they do not drink on an empty stomach. If people do not think they will be able to drive home, they should call a taxi or ask a relative to drive.
